It has also kept the mass tourism that destroyed the atmosphere of Marrakech at a comfortable distance. The medina is quieter, cheaper, and more genuine as a result.
Essaouira is one of the most affordable cities you can choose — budget travellers and lean nomads thrive here. Winter is essentially nonexistent — mild temperatures year-round. Sunshine is abundant — nearly year-round sun if that matters to your mood. Building deep community is genuinely possible — locals are open and connections run deep. The city is highly walkable and you can live here without a car. The rewards for exploring are exceptional — layers of history, culture, and surprise around every corner.

The ramparts at sunset facing the Atlantic are one of the great free views in Morocco. The spice souk inside the medina is smaller than Marrakech and the vendors are significantly less aggressive. The fresh fish grilled at the port by the fishing boats is the best cheap meal in the city.
