The moai — the giant stone heads — are real and extraordinary and were carved by a civilisation that then largely destroyed itself through deforestation and resource depletion. The parallels with contemporary civilisation are left as an exercise for the visitor.
Hanga Roa sits in the expensive tier — costs are high and you'll need a solid income to live comfortably. Winter is essentially nonexistent — mild temperatures year-round. Sunshine is abundant — nearly year-round sun if that matters to your mood. Internet connectivity is unreliable — plan for this if remote work depends on stable connection. The expat scene is minimal — you'll need to integrate locally or accept relative isolation. Exploration rewards are limited — what you see is largely what you get.

Rent a bicycle or scooter — the island is 24km long and all the main sites are accessible without a tour. Ahu Akivi is the only moai site where the statues face the ocean — everywhere else they face inland. The archaeological museum is small but excellent. The Tapati festival in February is the most extraordinary cultural event in the Pacific.
